World Heart day reminds us of the necessity for the care to be shown towards keeping our heart powerful and healthy. Insisting to make heart-healthy choices in our work, play and living environment is one major goal of World Heart Day organisation. The slogan for 2017 is “Share the power”. This efforts encourage people to share how each one of us power our hearts.


Diseases related to heart is examined in a detailed way in Ayurveda. The etiology, pathogenesis, types of disease, treatment, symptoms & various types of acute pain are present in ancient Ayurveda texts.

All the heart-related disorders are called Hrid Roga in Ayurveda. Hrudhaya means heart which can be expanded as –

“HRU”- Harati (receive).

“DA”- Dadati (give).

“YA”- Yagati (to control).

While modern medicine contribute the heart issues to high cholesterol, hereditary factors, diabetes, depression and so on, this is the right time to know the factors briefed by Ayurveda.

The etiology of heart diseases, as per Ayurvedic principles are

Dietary factors :

  • Guru – consuming excess of food which is heavy to digest.
  • Usna – consuming food that is too hot
  • Kasaya – consuming too much of astringent taste
  • Tikta – consuming excess bitter foods or taste.

Somatic factors :

  • Srama – excessive physical exhaustion or labourious work
  • Vega Vidharana Sandhaarana – suppressing natural urges
  • Abhigata – physical or mental trauma (injuries)
  • Ativerechana – administering excess purgation therapies

Psychological factors :

  • Cinta (Sanchintana) – over-thinking, stress, too-much of anxiety
  • Bhaya – fear
  • Trasa – panic
  • Mada – pride (to the level of being maddened)

Other factors include :

  • Gadatichara – improper treatment of other diseases
  • Ama dosha – excessive ama or toxins in the body
  • Karshana – emaciation – being extremely lean due to starvation.

 Now, it must be easy for us to sort out which habit of ours is going to contribute to a heart disorder in future.
